Frequently Asked Questions

History of MacRepertory Programs

Q: What is the history of the contents of the MacRepertory program

Answer: The latest package contains a new Library CD called MacRpertory the libraries for Macintosh or Windows and a CD application for version 6.0.
This is available for both ADB and USB CPD's (Mac) and Hardlocks, Sentinel Pro and USB for windows.  The CD applications started with MR 5.5.01 (Mac only, 5.6 for windows), which was designed for the iMate/ADB adapter.
Previous versions 5.3.7 and below were on floppy diskette. The library CD for the versions up to 5.5.01 was entitled 3.9/5.0 (Mac) and MacRepertory Library CD for Macintosh and Windows (for windows). These CD's do not contain all the books for the newest core or full libraries. These older CD's would have had extra MM books on floppy diskette.

Q: How do I load the new version of the program?

A: For both windows and Mac you should start loading with the library CD.  This will create a MacRepertory folder** on the hard drive which will contain a cases folder (empty), a keynote folder (containing 4 Comfirmatories files + MM) and a Repertory (Mac) or Repertories folder (windows) (containing all the latest Reps).
Then load the 5.6.x application CD by following the prompts.
* NB: The windows Library and Apps are auto run (should start automatically)
**NB: The Library contents will depend on weather a FULL or CORE install was carried out from the custom install window
Q: I have a user, who has the old library CD but has gotten the latest 5.6.x on CD, how do I load?

A: If the user has MR 3.9/5.0 for Mac or MacRepertory library for windows and Macintosh you should start with the Application first. This will create a MacRepertory folder on the hard drive. Next you should insert the old library CD. For Macintosh....
Open the CD, double click on the folder called MacRepertory 5.0, double click on the folder called Keynotes, highlight all the MM's from the CD and drag to the keynote folder which is inside the MacRepertory 5.0 folder on the hard drive. Repeat the process for the repertory folder. DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON BEGIN INSTALL 5.0 OR JUST DRAG THE MACREPERTORY FOLDER FROM THE CD TO THE HARDDRIVE
For windows.....
After the Macrepertory folder has been created by the application, place
the old lib CD into the CD drive and open windows explorer. Open the CD (called Macrep) on the left side of explorer, on the right you will see two folders, MacRepertory and Zizia. Double click on MacRep, two more folders will appear, Keynotes and reps. Double click on Keynotes, highlight all the MM's, right click one and select "Copy", go to left side of explorer, scroll up and locate the MacRepertory folder on the hard drive, locate the keynote folder inside, right click it and select "paste", repeat for Reps to Repertories.

Q: What do I do with the extra books not on the CD?

A: Load the complete 4.5 from the CD as per the instructions. Load the
books on floppy diskette for Macintosh by inserting into floppy drive, double clicking on the image on the desktop, double click on install and follow prompts.
For windows go to START button, to RUN and write A:/Setup.exe and click OK and follow the prompts.

Q: My library would load but my app (5.6.x) CD would not?

A: For Macintosh, restart the computer and see if it will read, if not
either email a new one or send a new app CD. If it is an old app they will have to purchase anew 5.6.x app as the warranty will have expired (same as for windows users)

For windows it maybe the Autorun is not functioning. Insert CD, double
click on MY COMPUTER icon, can you see the CD in the CD ROM drive? If so double click and double click on SETUP, follow the prompts. If not resend a new CD or email files.

Q: My Library CD will not load?
A: First insert CD again, anything happen? If not check another CD like the application and see if that will be read, if not ask for any other CD to check the drive is not faulty, if it won't read, make sure they re putting the CD in the right way UP and retry, still not working, assume the drive is faulty.  If the CD can open but the autorun (windows) or auto install (Mac) won't function, you can physically drag the keynotes and reps to the MacRepertory folder on the hard drive as per #

Contents

Q: What is the CPD or Authorization key?
A: There are five different types of Keys/ Copy Protection Devices (CPD's)  For the Mac there are two.  The ADB EVE 3(Grey) and the new USB EVE 3(Purple)  For windows there are three.  The  Hardlock LT and Sentinel Super Pro which connect to Parallel/printer Ports and the Super pro for USB which connects to USB port.

Q: I thought I bought the "complete MacRepertory" , why can't I open all the books?
A: There are two things going on here,
#1 the Complete is a repertory with various versions entitled, complete
.rep (3.0); complete 4.5 or complete millennium
#2 : MacRepertory is a repertorizing program that contains a library of
repertories and materia medica (keynotes) of varying titles.

Q: I can see all these Reps and keynotes but can only open some of them.  The rest give me a message that says " I need to purchase or a new access # is required"?

A: The MacRepertory library CD puts all (if you selected full library in
the custom install window) the Repertories and Keynotes into their
respective folders. You may only have purchased X number of books which you are encoded (authorized or have access) to open.

CPD ERRORS

Q: The "Authorization key is incorrect"?

A: First determine that the CPD and Apps don't match.
After uninstalling MacRepertory/ ReferenceWorks applications and
reinstalling with the user and finding the same error, contact HQ to re-send new apps and key and get old CPD returned. It is an encode and CPD discrepancy problem
The exception may be with USB Macintosh users incompatibility with Eve 3 and iMate....
1. Make sure EVEinit is off in extensions and Restart. (see below)
2. That the imate USB driver is "on (X'd)" in extensions. (Extension was
provided with the MR 5.5.01 app) (see below to download from web)
3. See if they have updated ROM and Firmware. (only with original iMac
(bondi color) and found on the MR 5.5.01 app) Last resort.

Q: How do I disable the EVEInit extension?

A: Go to apple menu, control panels, extensions manager, locate Extensions
folder and UN X the box to the left of EVEInit, then click the Restart button at the bottom of the window.

Q: How do I get the iMate USB driver if I have the MR 5.6 application

A: Go to www.griffintechnology.com and download their latest iMate driver.

Q: "Please connect authorization key"?

A: Is the CPD connected properly and in right port? Did you start the computer with the CPD connected?
Is there anything else connected to CPD, eg. a Scanner, Printer, etc? Does CPD work when nothing is connected?
If so, do they have a splitter to allow two connections to the port?
For USB Macintosh with Eve 3 and iMate.....
1. Make sure EVEinit is off in extensions.
2. That the imate USB driver is on in extensions. (latest driver can be
found at www.griffintechnology.com)
3. They have updated ROM and Firmware.
4. For EVE3's test the port connection with a mouse to see if it's the port or key. Send new key and apps to see if that helps (exchange Hardlock for Sentinel (see below). For windows users with Celeron processors they will need a new Sentinel CPD and apps

Q: What is the difference between a Hardlock and a Sentinel?

A: The hardlocks are the older CPD's for windows. They are Uni-directional.
They worked fine and still do on most machines. The important difference with the Sentinel is its Bi-directional, which means information can go in and out from the computer. This key will help people who have printer or scanner, etc problems

Q: My program opens intermittently. Why?

A: 1) The port could be missing a prong, so that the connections are not being made all the time. The only solution is to replace the port on the computer. This is usually a result of the computer being packed away with the key always connected. This usually loosens the prongs on the port. Or it may a result of the CPD being removed forcibly.
2) The key could be defective. Simply replace the key. If the problem is
intermittent, then it usually is not the key, because if the key is
defective it will never open the program.
To test whether it is the port or the key, replace the key with a mouse in the same port and see if you can move the cursor around on the desktop. Be sure the mouse works before you do this.

Q: I just got a new iMac, powerbookbook G3, etc. and don't know where to connect my Copy Protection Device?

A: Their two choices are
a) Purchase an IMATE adapter to be able to attach your ADB eve 3 to the USB port on the new computer. (this requires a download from www.griffintechnology.com of the latest iMate driver (remember to UN X the EVEInit from the extensions)
b) Send them a new USB key (purple)

Q: Windows NT users unable to open program. Get system32 HLVDD.dll error (older version 5.3.7). VERY RARE A: For users with 5.37 or before open NT351 or WinNT folder in MacRepertory folder. Double click on Protect.bat. This will allow Hardlock link. Then open program. If that fails to open, go to www.Hardlock.com and download latest 32 HLVDD file. New 5.6 and higher users will have this driver on the application.

Program Errors

Q: After installing fine, the program opens with a message that the Confirmatories are missing?

A: a) If using the 5.6 check the date of the confirmatories (4) in win
explorer. They should be 5/15/00 not 1/18/00. Either copy the
confirmatories from the new Library CD and place in the keynote folder,or send new apps. You could also email the confirmatories.
b) Where is the K application? It must be in the same MacRepertory folder as the Keynote folder. If they have it on the desktop, drop back into the MacRepertory folder and double click
c) Are they using some old alias or shortcut? Ask how they open MR, locate and delete any old alias' and shortcuts and remake from the MacRepertory folder
d) The older library CD's only had 3 confirmatories (we now have 4 for the extra remedies), make sure there is 4 in the keynote folder (its OK to have both the old 3 and new 4 in same folder)

Q: After installing I get a message "the configuration does not match the program version"?

A: This is an encoder mistake. Happens mostly on MR basic users. The user was mistakenly encoded for the Pro version instead of the Basic version application. They must be sent a new CD from KHA.

Q: After installing the new library I am missing many books?

A: Did they install the core or the Full? Open hard drive and open Repertory folder and see what reps are in there. Simply, reinstall and be sure Full library is selected.

Q: No not all the books that they purchased according to their book list are checked?

A: if one are two are not checked they can call us and get an access #, if many are not checked then its simpler to send a new Application.

Q: I purchased all the books but I get a message saying the rep or keynote needs to be purchased or needs a new access #?

A: What book are they trying to open? Did they actually buy it? Is it
loaded in the folder? Open another Rep and see if which books are checked in the option/preferences/add books menu? If they are allowed to open it call HQ and get access #.

Q: I have all the proper reps and keynotes but it says the newer app can't open old books?

A: This only concerns Macintosh users with the 3.9/5.0 library CD, they
have brought over or already have the 3.9 books on the hard drive. You will see this because the reps will list both Repertory and Synonyms instead of Repertory and Index for each book. They simply need to install the newer library books from the newer library CD.

Q: How do I make a rep or key note a default?

A: For version 5.37 and below hold down OPTION / ALT key and click file menu, select "open rep as default" locate the repertory you want and open it.
For 5.5 and above just go to File menu, click open repertory. Check the
"make this the default" box and then select your Repertory.

Patient Charts

Q: I went to open my cases and I see 2 files for each case, a .CAS and .RSR, which one do I click on?

A: Double click on the .CAS, the RSR is a resource file. You can hide it in windows by clicking on the "files of type" and select Patients case (*.cas)

Q: I saved information to my Patient Chart and now I can't find it?

A: Open Patient Charts. Move horizontal scroll bar to left. are they there?
If not, how are they saving charts? Do a find for name. Show them how to save.

Q: I went to look for my Patient chart in "File, open Patient Chart" and there is nothing in the window?

A: Be sure the Folder you are currently looking in is the Cases folder. If
not, note the folder/location where the patient chart is being saved so you can retrieve them later. Create a Cases folder if you like. Do a find for that patient if necessary, MR 5.6 should automatically go to cases folder

Q: Everytime I click on the patient information, I get a window asking if I want to rename or delete case item?

A: You have to click on the icon, not the text. The text allows you to
change what the rubric clipboard or graph is called or delete them. The
icon opens the window.

Q: How do I delete saved rubrics clipboards, etc., from Patient Charts?

A: Click on the word, not icon and click delete

Q: How do I move saved information to a Patient chart that is not open?

A: Open the window of the saved item you want to move. Hold down Alt/option key and click on file menu. Select "Open patient save window". Click on Patient Chart you want to move it to. Click "don't save" from box that
appears. What happens Select save graph/ all rubrics. (only in Mac, windows has a bug 2/28/01)

Searching

Q: When I go to the Edit menu to search, it is grayed out. Why?

A: 1) either the index file for that repertory is not in the same folder as
the Repertory file or
2) The repertory may have had changes or additions placed in it and needs to be re-indexed or
3) You are using the Basic or Lite version and that feature is not available.

Q: My Synonyms bring up an error when I click on them.  Why?

A: This is a bug that should be fixed next release (Jan 02)

Q: My sections are grayed out when I try and search in ALL repertories?

A: This is because some repertories don't have sections they are alphabetical. Instead of section names they have letters, like Murphy's Repertory.

Q: My windows computer crashes when I adjust the "remedies in rubric" box while in the Complete Millennium?

A: This is a bug incompatibility between the Millennium and the 5.6 it has been reported. The work around is not to use this function

Incorporating Changes, Adding rubrics etc.

Q: How do I add a Rubric and a Remedy?

A: Select "Edit Repertory" from the edit menu. Select "create" to create a new repertory changes file (make sure you save it to appropriate place that you will remember). After naming your changes file, you will return to the program. A "change" menu will now appear on the menu list. Highlight the rubric where you want your added rubric to appear or remedy change to take place. Select "Add rubric" or "Change remedies" from the change menu and type it in. P.S. remember to run the Indexer program when finished.

Q: What are these "Repertory Changes" files I have on my computer?

A: These are files, which keep a listing of ALL the changes you have ever made. You create this file BEFORE you start to change the repertory, so the program has a place to note the change(s) you are making.

Q: What do I do with this "error" file?

A: You can open this file in any word processing progam to view the list of errors. Usually errors are created when the change is already been made and you are trying to make the same change.

Design Stratagies

Q: How can I make my Graph and Analyze Stratagy the default.

A: Under the Analyze menu select "Design Strategies" then Select Default strategy and click edit. Change the settings but keep the name "Default Strategy" then click save. Your Default strategy will now be the saved version you made. For making personal graphs draw the graph you want, and select "Design Graph" from the graph menu and select save graph. Name the graph what you want and make a new icon for it. If you want the new graph to go on the tool pallet check the replace existing graph icon and click OK.

Q: How can I delete a Rubric from the Graph?

A: Hold down the ALT/option key and click on the rubric

Error Messages

Q: I received a -42 error while opening MacRep?

A: This is an old error and is connected to the keynotes. All you have to
do is click OK and make a Keynote the default. Then close MR and Restart.

Q: I get a GDI.exe or Kernal32 error in windows?

A: Don't know the origin of these but if you go to Start, to Run and type in SFC you can see what files are corrupted and replace them from your start up CD (win 98 + only)

Q: Any errors dealing with "MyCurstrategy" ?

A: Remove settings file and restart.  (On MacOS9.x you will find this file in the Preferences Folder which is inside the System Floder.)

Q: When copying MacRepertory Library CD for windows a message appears saying the destination and location are the same?

A: You are probably dragging the folders from the CD to the MacRepertory CD in windows explorer. It should be dragged to the MacRepertory folder on the C drive

Q: Any font errors?

A: The program cannot find all fonts. Go to explorer locate MR folder, open and see if all fonts are in there..Airal90, GnvaUP, GnvaDown, Remfont 90, Remfont00. If not reinstall the application.

Q: "Confirmatories are missing" message on start up of MacRepertory?

A: The confirmatory files are located in the keynote folder __.
1: Make sure the application is in the same folder as the keynotes (in the MacRepertory 5.0 Folder)
2: If using the 5.6 on the PC check the date of the confirmatories in windows explorer. They should be 5/15/00 not 1/18/00. Either copy the confirmatories from the new Library CD (check date first). If they do not have that CD, email them the 4 confirmatory files or send a new MR app CD.

Q: Each time I try and add to my personal keynotes it says its out of memory and/or is locked?

A: This is for older versions (new versions say its locked, just click OK to unlock). In windows, go to Windows explorer, open the keynote folder, highlight one keynote, press CTRL + A to highlight all. Right click one, select properties, Uncheck Read only, close window and restart MacRepertory.

Q: I get an error -43 in Mac with OS 8.6?

This is a "too many files open" error. Usually occurs when opening REFERENCEWORKS. You must remove some fonts (system folder, font folder) like wingdings, etc. that the user will never use or turn off some
extensions or start up items.

  Printing

Q: I can only print out one page of my graph from MR, why?

A: The settings are set to print out the first page only, to print more simply go to "File" Menu/Preferences (Win) or "Application" Menu (Macintosh OSX) and deselect the "Print first page only" tick.

Q: Can't see the full name of the Rubric when the graph prints out?

A: Reopen graph, can you see the full name? If not click in graph grid, a hand will appear, move graph to right till you see the full rubric name. Then go to file menu and select print window.

Q: My MacRepertory crashes on printing?

A: What version do you have?  If its 5.4 -5.5 then there is a bug in your software and you should upgrade to 5.7.

Q: Graph remedies are garbled in MacRepertory

A: This usually happens when a graph is made in ReferenceWorks and exported to MacRepertory.   If ReferenceWorks is closed its fonts are transferred to MacRepertory and MacRepertory graphs are affected.
Work around- if you open RerefenceWorks don’t close it till your finished with both programs. Fixed in Version 2.6.2 of ReferenceWorks.

A: You have some hidden files, open win explorer, go to View menu, click Folder options, check "show all files" and view as details.   Programs Don’t Open (when they did formerly)

When we made the MR 5.6 and RW 2.6.2/.3 last year,  we had the original Rainbow SSD 5.39 driver. This was not Windows approved so, after a couple of months it gets "kicked" out by the windows system and MR /RW  will ask for the key.

Problem:
If you come across any customers who say "that their programs worked yesterday and won't work today" you might suspect this problem. You can check in device manager and see under USB controllers if the USB token has a yellow warning sign on it.

Remedy:
Download rainbows latest driver, (currently SSD 5.39.2) and install. This driver is currently on the MR 5.7 & RW 2.66 applications.
