Heart Beart 6

EDUCATION

Continuing education is vital for homeopaths; the therapy is too deep and the advances in theory and materia medica too rapid and extensive for anyone to be able to sit on their laurels.

Each issue of Heartbeat we'll introduce you to the world's greatest homeopathic teachers who use MacRepertory and ReferenceWorks in their courses. These courses will be very useful to you as you'll learn not only what to do to improve your prescribing but exactly how to do it using your software.

First on our list is Lou Klein of the Luminos Homeopathic Courses. This is one of the world's great courses. The students uniformly report a fundamental change to their practice taking them to a depth of homeopathy that they had not realized existed before.

Our other highlighted homeopathic educational resource is the Desert Institute School of Classical Homeopathy in Arizona. In Phoenix, this is one of the most dynamic, powerful and useful homeopathic programs anywhere. Serious students of homeopathy are relocating to take advantage of the rich community of homeopaths growing there.

Here's what Lou says about teaching with MacRepertory and ReferenceWorks:

"My homeopathy has always been "patient-centric." In other words, the integrity of what I did was determined by the patient response (or lack of it) to homeopathic remedies chosen. Now, I even have students bring cases to work on or see live and I make a remedy suggestion. They follow up which gives a third party verification of a homeopathic prescription. It became clear to me, in order to better serve my patients, that I needed to go outside the box of a closed formal system. In the end, what I utilize is an open informal system. This means that a patient that comes to see me may need a remedy that I know little or even nothing about."

"Without a computerized ability to effect search and comparison I would never be where I am now in terms of accuracy of prescribing. I therefore primarily use ReferenceWorks to expand my prescribing possibilities. I have always delighted in the quality of new information introduced in these programs. I find the latest upgrade has articles from Links, journals, personal reflections, new provings. All these add to the ability and confidence of prescribing a remedy you know little about. This confidence level is partly what it is all about. The other issue is flexibility in moving and grooving through all the information to ultimately make the final selection of a single remedy."

"But even prior to the remedy selection, my methodology involves carefully selecting the rubric or the even the search word or phrase prior to putting it into MacRepertory or ReferenceWorks. This involves making sure that the rubric or search phrase represents something of the totality or "inbegriff" of the case. If you are going to even use a rubric that is physical symptom I would like to see it represent something of the totality. Because of this careful, prescreening of the initial input to the programs I find I use fewer rubrics or search phrases. The number can be as low as one to two but usually three to four. I may amalgamate concepts into one rubric. The new MacRepertory "theme palette" greatly facilitates in amalgamating concepts into one and I am beginning to use it."

"I use a relatively simple strategy in both MacRepertory and ReferenceWorks and that is relying heavily on "number of rubrics." I can do this since I have put intensive thought into the selection of rubrics and, as I said, prescreened the rubrics. This means that I expect the remedy to run through all the rubrics, concepts or amalgamated rubrics. In the end though, you have to research each individual remedy and have the flexibility to move on if it doesn't fit."

"The new ReferenceWorks lists all the remedies and an easy click will bring up all the books it is in. You can now either view the initial materia medica with a list of all books or with a click you can view all the remedies. This elegant change and interface cer-tainly speeds up the process of viewing."

"All in all, both programs have reached a state of maturity whereby they represent and facilitate the elegance of what we do. Well, it sometimes works and looks simple, but behind is a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Thanks, David and Kent Homeopathic Associates for putting in all the hard work."

Louis Klein has been studying and practicing homeopathy for over 20 years. His initial studies were with the Bay Area Study Group followed by seminars and personal study with George Vithoulkas, Bill Gray MD, and other masters of homeopathy.

In 1984 he became a registered member of the UK Society of Homeopaths as well as a licentiate of the London College of Classical Homeopathy. He later became a founding member and founding Chairman of the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH).

Mr. Klein teaches in North America, and lectures in Europe. He currently is the primary teacher of The Homeopathic Master Clinician Course. It is one of the largest post-graduate courses in North America with various locations in the U.S. and Canada. Lou has had papers published in the Proceedings of the IFH Professional Case Conference (1989-1994), New England Journal of Homeopathic Medicine, Homeo-pathic Links and The Homeopath.
